Title: Partnering For Diabetes Prevention: (Diabetes is Everybody's Business)

Author: J. Hare and N. Davis

Purpose: To promote linkages among health care providers, business, industry, and consumers to be effective stakeholders in promoting diabetes prevention strategies through healthy lifestyle changes.

Setting: The Michigan Diabetes Outreach Network of Southern Michigan has established a community partnership model that includes leaders from Industry, Health, and Consumer backgrounds. This partnership has integrated both operational and administrative roles and is a unique blend of professional and consumer roles that extends to and beyond the medical community.

Intervention: These partners work not only in the Diabetes Outreach Network Advisory capacity but help to develop a regional strategic plan which incorporates prevention strategies in the media, schools, workplace and health fairs in a 10 county region.

Outcomes: Partnerships have developed which have resulted in over 3000 school children, hearing a healthy lifestyle message about increasing activity and making healthy food choices. Other partners across the region have helped carry the prevention message to people in many settings such as support groups, area aging groups, diabetes classes, churches, disparity groups, health fairs, workplace wellness, and tobacco reduction meetings, to name a few.

Conclusions: In a time where resources are scarce, it enables partners to pool their resources to provide a unified message. Working together shares the burden while making the most of existing resources. It expands and intensifies resources and drives the public health aspect of developing healthy lifestyles into core communities.

These partnerships have distinct and organizational relationships that extend to and beyond the medical and health community. This networking presents multiple approaches to carry a distinct message, that of diabetes and disease prevention through healthy lifestyles interventions which leads to cost savings for everyone. The unique experiences of individual stakeholders, allows the partners to better understand the overwhelming burden we all face not only in diabetes but other diseases.
