Title: MDON Partnership with the Michigan Pharmacy Association in Consumer Awareness Activities

Objective: To partner with Michigan pharmacists in a statewide diabetes focused consumer awareness effort.

Methods:  The Michigan Diabetes Outreach Network (MDON) collaborated with the Michigan Pharmacy Association (MPA) Public Affairs committee to develop a consumer awareness campaign in November 2002. This campaign was the kick off for an ongoing partnership where Michigan pharmacists will access both the MPA and the MDON websites for downloadable materials for November Diabetes Month activities and as needed throughout the year for patient education and professional reference.

Results: A statewide campaign in November 2002 included press releases, letters to the editor, an article in the MPA member journal, table tents, bag stuffers, downloadable consumer information and fact sheets.

Conclusions: The MPA and MDON partnership is a "win-win" combination. The MPA is pleased to have credible information about diabetes that is medically sound and peer reviewed. The information is readily accessible to pharmacists throughout the entire state. MDON is able to maximize its outreach efforts through a volunteer force of qualified professionals who come in touch with potentially every person with diabetes in the state.
