Cost Reduction Act

To find out if your insurance company is affected by this act you need to call them. Note: it will take the insurance companies some time to establish reimbursement policies for diabetes related items/services.

When you call, first, asked them if they are regulated by the State of Michigan.

If they say "NO" then there is nothing more you can do. This Cost Reduction Act applies only to insurance companies regulated by the State of Michigan.
If they say "YES"
Ask if they are aware of the legislation passed in Michigan requiring coverage of diabetes supplies and services.
If they say "NO"... have  them find out about the legislation referred to as Public Act #424 and Public Act #425 of the Diabetes Cost Reduction Act.

Here is a list of some of the items that could be covered under this act: Here is a list of some of the diabetes services that are covered under this act:

For example, do you need to:
Get a prescription from the doctor ? or
Get special forms from your insurance company for the doctor to complete?

Ask your insurance company if and how your specific policy will be affected.
For example do you still have to pay:
a deductible, if applicable?  or
a co-pay, if applicable?

Ask any other specific questions you may have regarding coverage.

If your State of Michigan regulated insurance company does not comply with this legislation after April 1, 2001. (Note, once again, they may not have all their procedures in place for what they cover or how much will be reimbursed by April 1st.)
