Diabetes Awareness Campaign

The Diabetes Awareness workgroup was formed with the purpose of increasing community awareness of, and education about, type 2 diabetes, its risk factors and its prevention and self-management.

It is composed of agencies and organizations in Detroit and the state of Michigan working to prevent diabetes and its related complications.

Michigan Eyes on Diabetes (MEOD)

A community based collaborative which is a direct outgrowth of Healthy People 2010, which is a program developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to improve American's health regardless of income, race or ethnicity.

The focus of MEOD is to reduce visual impairment due to diabetic retinopathy by raising awareness of the need for an annual dilated retinal examination for persons with diabetes.  The Optometric Institute and Clinic of Metropolitan Detroit (OICMD) will see the majority of uninsured diabetic participants. Optical Dimensiuons of Royal Oak Michigan is providing funding for these evaluations (uninsured).

Promoting Healthy Eating in Detroit (PHED)

PHED conducts Healthy Eating Demonstrations, Mini-Markets (where fresh produce is available at wholesale prices), and Physical Activity Events regularly. Their monthly newsletter gives details regarding these.

PHED is a collaboration between community-based organizations, the City of Detroit Dept. of Health and Wellness Promotion - Nutrition Division & Eastside Village Health Worker Partnership, the REACH Detroit Partnership, and the University of Michigan  Schools of Public Health and Social Work. It is a Detroit Community Academic Urban Research Center-affiliated project, funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
