General, People with Diabetes...

Do not need any special diet foods. (Some of the reduced
calorie items can be useful).

Benefit from eating high fiber foods
such as dried beans, fruits, vegetables and whole grains everyday.

Should use less added fat, salt and sugar.

Can eat foods which are good for the whole family.
-
Should decrease portion sizes, if weight is a concern.

Benefit from limiting alcohol and if drinking, only
drinking with meals
.

Benefit from eating a wide variety of foods.
- Need
to limit the amount of saturated fat and transfatty acids consumed
- found in animal products such as cheese, hamburger, bacon, butter
and other fats which are solid at room temperature.

Benefit from eating on a regular basis (every 4-5 hours).

Need to eat consistent amounts of carbohydrates (from
fruit, milk, bread/starch, and sweets) at meals.
- If
using insulin, need to learn how to adjust insulin to accomodate
foods eaten and changes in activity levels.
